The catalogue of competitive videogames
The Electronic Sports Compendium (ESC) is the IES research series on esports. Volume I, the Catalogue of Competitive Videogames, lists every video game used in formal competition, with specific competition rules and, where applicable, prize pools. Its aim is to define the scope of esports and to capture the evolution of the field through the games that shaped it.
First published in July 2023 with 1,007 titles, the catalogue was updated in June 2026 to version 2.0, reaching 1,042 titles with 35 new competitive games added. Research is continuous, refining the list and exploring the history of competitive gaming.

Research, conducted by IES
IES conducts the research behind the Compendium: a meticulous analysis of tournament archives, competition reports, publisher documentation and data from international sports federations, including harder-to-find sources for titles from the 1990s and early 2000s. Five inclusion criteria keep the selection rigorous, and the catalogue is updated on an annual basis.
